A new generation of Apple laptops has arrived. But this time, the “next generation” brand does not only refer to upgrades – it heralds extraordinary changes in design and technology.
Design
You need a lot of different parts to build a cover for a standard laptop. In the process, you increase the weight, size, and potential for problems. To address these points, Apple set itself the challenge of building a cover from only one part.
This goal may have seemed far-fetched at first, but Apple was convinced that the effort was worth it. The result is the unibody of the new MacBook, a casing created from only one piece of solid aluminum.
Unibody changed the look of the MacBook. More than ever, it gives the impression of a sophisticated and well-made laptop. The unibody also feels incredibly robust. In addition, the use of aluminum helps the new MacBook weigh 0.23 kg (0.5 lb) less than the previous model and shave 0.34 cm (0.13 in) of its height.
Various manufacturing techniques
Pressing such a casing as you would with plastic is a thing of the past. Instead, Apple manufactures unibodies by milling on computer numerical control (CNC) machines.
These machines are some of the most precise manufacturing tools on the planet. Apple grasped their potential and used it to the maximum extent. For example, the sleep light on the new MacBook appears to shine from behind the aluminum. Apple achieved this by thinning the metal and drilling small holes.
Environmental standards
A new MacBook will last for years, but it’s good to know that the aluminum body is recyclable. This reflects the seriousness with which Apple takes responsibility for the environment. The company has applied strict standards to every aspect of the new MacBook, insisting that manufacturing techniques go hand in hand with the strictest environmental principles.
Brominated flame retardants (BFRs) are absent from all internal components of the new MacBook; none of the internal cables have PVC; the screen glass contains no arsenic; and the display behind it is without mercury. The new MacBook sets the standard for completely removing toxins from computers.
When it comes to energy efficiency, the new MacBook has a double win to celebrate. Not only is it Energy Star compliant as before, but it’s also earned an EPEAT Gold rating. EPEAT is the leading environmental rating system for desktops, laptops, and monitors. Achieving a gold rating is a significant achievement.
other functions
Other outstanding features of the new MacBook are the trackpad, screen, and Mini DisplayPort. The trackpad immediately catches the eye as it is almost 40% larger than before. When you start using it, you will also appreciate its extra features. The trackpad now has full Multi-Touch functionality, which includes pinching to zoom in and out; swiping with three and four fingers; creating a right-click area for shortcuts; and using any part of the trackpad surface as a button.
The new MacBook’s screen has changed to a thinner LED-backlit display that provides full brightness the moment the MacBook is turned on. This is complemented by a bezel-less glass front that makes the widescreen display appear larger than its 13.3-inch size.
Mini DisplayPort replaces Mini DVI and FireWire 400 ports. Mini DisplayPort provides an easy plug-and-play connection for Apple LED Cinema Display and can display images on both MacBook and Cinema Display simultaneously. If needed, Mini DisplayPort adapters are available for VGA, DVI and dual-link DVI connections.
The 2.4GHz MacBook also has an added bonus. It now boasts the backlit keyboard so admired on the MacBook Pro and MacBook Air.
Technology
The new aluminum Macbook 12in M7 is available in two models, 2.0 GHz and 2.4 GHz. Both processors use Intel Core 2 Duo technology with 3 MB of shared on-chip L2 cache.
The standard models of the previous generation were 2.1GHz and 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duos with the same L2 cache. However, both new versions have a 1066MHz system bus as opposed to 800MHz. Additionally, 2GB of memory (with 4GB if you want) is now standard. Hard drives are 160GB Serial ATA at 5400rpm for 2.0GHz and 250GB for 2.4GHz. You can increase the storage to 320GB or 350GB, and there is an option for a 128GB SSD.
As for optical drives, the new MacBooks no longer offer Combo. Apple has passed this up in favor of the excellent 8x slot SuperDrive in both models.
Graphic Design
All of the new MacBook’s features and technologies deserve your attention, but one, in particular, is generating interest and excitement.
The old MacBook had an Intel GMA X3100 graphics processor with 144MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with the main memory. The new MacBook has an integrated processor that provides up to five times better performance. This graphics performance, the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M, is the result of development work between Apple and NVIDIA. It has 256 MB DDR3 SDRAM and contains 16 parallel processor cores. The result is 3D images that are fast, responsive, and more detailed. MacBook is now a highly sought-after laptop for gamers.
battery
With all these extras to deal with, especially the GPU, you can expect the MacBook’s battery to suffer. On the contrary: the official battery life has increased from four and a half to five hours.
Apple has achieved this by keeping energy efficiency at the forefront of its thinking. From the MacBook screen to the NVIDIA GeForce 9400M processor, the design embraces the lowest possible power consumption.
Innovation
The evolution that the MacBook represents is profound. It is a notebook that represents impressive design, manufacturing, performance, and eco-innovation. It also throws down the gauntlet for other companies to pick up if they choose. Meanwhile, the MacBook remains exceptional.
